‘Joina’ Sees iSandi Transform Music Into Message with RADA Unearthed

On “Joina,” South African artist iSandi leans fully into the idea that music can do more than express — it can intervene, support, and connect. Released in partnership with RADA Unearthed, the track emerges as a carefully considered piece of socially conscious songwriting.

At first listen, “Joina” feels gentle and reflective. But beneath that softness lies urgency. The song addresses substance addiction and the ripple effects of abuse, not through confrontation, but through compassion — offering a space where awareness and healing can coexist.

It’s this balance that defines the track. Rather than centring despair, iSandi shifts the focus toward restoration, asking what it might mean to rebuild through care and collective responsibility.

The collaboration with RADA Unearthed amplifies that intention. As the music platform of RADA, the initiative supports artists creating work that engages directly with social issues, with proceeds contributing to community-focused projects.

For iSandi, this alignment is essential.

“Music carries moral weight,” she says. “It can heal, harm, unite or divide. That belief guides how and why I create.”

Her approach to music has always been shaped by story. Growing up in the Eastern Cape, surrounded by nature and raised within a close-knit family, she developed a deep sensitivity to narrative and emotion. Her aunt’s storytelling — filled with folklore and legend — laid the foundation for an artistic voice that now moves fluidly between personal reflection and collective themes.

That duality is present in her sound. Blending Afro-experimental elements with Western harmonic influences, iSandi creates compositions that feel expansive yet intimate — grounded in feeling, but open to interpretation.

“Joina” sits comfortably within that space. It doesn’t dictate meaning, but invites it — encouraging listeners to reflect on their own experiences while engaging with the wider message.

The track also forms part of RADA Unearthed Volume 3, a compilation bringing together South African artists committed to using music as a platform for awareness and change. Within that context, “Joina” feels like a quiet anchor — a moment of stillness within a broader conversation.

Since the release of her debut EP Intyatyambo, iSandi has steadily expanded her creative world. From live performances alongside artists such as Bongeziwe Mabandla and Muneyi, to collaborative projects like “Together We Are Stronger,” her work consistently returns to themes of humanity, growth, and connection.

Her practice extends beyond the stage. As an educator and composer, she works across disciplines — teaching music, creating for film and ambient environments, and building soundscapes designed for reflection and memory through her platform iSandi Ambient Soundscapes.

With “Joina,” that wider philosophy comes into focus. It’s not just a song, but a continuation of a broader intention: to create work that resonates beyond the moment of listening.

In a landscape where music is often consumed quickly, “Joina” asks something different. It asks listeners to pause, to feel, and — perhaps most importantly — to care.
